Missional Calling

It’s been said that the future of Christianity in our world is wrapped up in Christianity once again becoming a movement of people living “on mission.” In the military, soldiers may be sent on a mission, something they are commanded to do to the best of their abilities. In many ways, we as believers in Jesus Christ are also called on a mission. But this mission is a lifestyle, and a daily calling to walk as Jesus!

The Biblical record of this calling goes way back in history—to the days of Abram.

“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.’” (Genesis 12:1-2)

God sends Abram “on mission”—to go, be blessed, and to be a blessing to others.

Isaiah, the great prophet from the seventh century BC, shares a similar experience of being called on mission.

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” The mission is from God to “go!” and the response from His people was “send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)

In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus called His disciples to be on mission, saying, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." The calling and command here is to “go...and make disciples.”

So, where do we begin? Living on mission always begins at home. No matter where you live, whether you are young or old, single, married, rural or urban-based, you have the opportunity to connect and live out your faith with others who live near you. It is a BIG task, but it starts simply enough. Jesus commanded His followers to love the Lord completely, and to their love neighbors as they wished to be loved. Therefore, we begin living on mission where we live, loving God and our neighbors, and by doing so, we carry on the mission of God we have been called to follow.
