More Than Conquerors
Read Romans 8
Since Adam and Eve fell in Eden, mankind has been wrestling with broken identity, broken relationships, broken purpose, and the daily realities of sin and death. But Romans 8 brings hope! Through Christ, we are restored to our Creator and He is bringing new hope into everything else that is broken. This chapter is a celebration of God’s great power to redeem us.
Rest (vv. 1-4)
If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that we, on our own, are powerless to achieve salvation. We are too sinful, too prone to abandon God’s way for our own pursuits. Our righteousness is simply inadequate. But praise God, Jesus fulfilled the requirements for our salvation. And now, because of His sacrifice, we no longer need to live in condemnation.
Are you still living in shame? Take a minute to examine areas of your life where you’re carrying that burden, and ask God to help you recognize the freedom His salvation offers. Repent where needed, and rest in His forgiveness.
Reflect (vv. 5-13)
Now that you are no longer condemned, what does it look like to follow God’s Spirit rather than your own flesh, your human nature and desires? Those guided by the Spirit find life and peace. They’re not hostile toward God. They submit to His plans, even when those plans seem to be in direct contrast to worldly priorities. The irony is that the more you abandon your own earthly pursuits and cling to God’s Spirit, the same power that raised Christ from the grave will give you abundant life.
Ask God to help you consider your pursuits and motivations. Confess the areas where you’re driven by the world and its desires, and pray that you would long for the life the Spirit offers.
Rejoice (vv. 14-39)
Since there is no condemnation and there is life in the Spirit, we have reason to celebrate. God gave up his own Son, Jesus, so that we could be free from the curse of sin! Our relationships are all being restored again. Instead of being separated from God, we’re now His adopted children, and our reconciled relationship with Him changes everything else. We were slaves to sin, but now we’re alive in Christ. And nothing—nothing—can separate us from His love.
Let that reality sink in. No wonder Romans reminds us that our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory God is revealing in us. This is a time to worship our great God. In Him, because of the sacrifice of His Son, and through the power of His Spirit, we are more than conquerors. Let praise and adoration saturate your prayers as you consider that if God is for us, no one can be against us!
